Head Lake is going to be ruled by the dogs when Haliburton hosts its first Cottage Country Dog Festival this summer of 2014.

A Little History

splash dogsSplash Dogs was started in 2003. Ultimate Air Dogs USA was founded in 2005, by former Major League Baseball player Milt Wilcox.

In 2008, UAD partnered together with the United Kennel Club (UKC) which added dock jumping as a acknowledged UKC sport.

In 2009, UKC also recognized competitions run by Splash Dogs. Dogs can get UKC titles by competing in dock distance or height jumping like they can in agility, obedience, weight pulling, and others.

On Tuesday March 13th 2012, the Ultimate Air Dogs Canada version was born.

Following much deliberation they made the decision that absolutely everyone really should experience the same brand of fun and excitement that the US UAD teams have enjoyed the past 7 years and as a result Ultimate Air Dogs Canada was created.

Ultimate Air Dogs Canada is owned and operated by Canine Performance Canada Inc. and is sanctioned by Ultimate Air Dogs USA, using precisely the same rules and regulations as Ultimate Air Dogs USA.

The Dog Launch Dock

The dock is generally just under 40 ft long by 8 ft wide and 2 ft above the water surface, but could possibly fluctuate depending on the sanctioning organization. Any body of water or pool that's at least 4 ft deep is often used.

The dock is lined in artificial turf, carpet, or a rubber mat for increased traction and basic safety for the competitors. The handler may also use any amount of the dock and they might start their dog from any point on the dock the moment competing.

The Haliburton Event

On Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014 in between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., the general public is invited to Head Lake Park for a social gathering of man’s best friend.

Note - Year 2015 Event is August 15, 2015 from 10 am to 5 pm

Organized by Winterdance aided by the support and assistance of Dysart et al, this event is going to be showcasing the dynamic feats of the Ultimate Air Dogs ( – a series of dock diving competitions for dogs that travel throughout the province.

These dogs compete using a big pool like structure that has a platform on the side. There are 25 dogs registered with the series and they will be competing in three events:

  • splash
  • catch-it
  • fetch-it

Each of the events comes with some variation of the dogs leaping into the water, whether for distance or performing precision actions in the air.

Ultimate Air Dogs ScheduleThe competition series consists of nine stops with Haliburton being called Haliburton’s Ultimate Cottage Dog. The air dogs will compete at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

The thought to invite the Air Dogs came from Paul Braunton, a Winterdance former employee who has a couple of dogs that compete in the series. Braunton, who's a firefighter that now lives in Mississauga, believes this can be a crowd pleaser. Securing the Air Dogs was at the root of the festival since it is such a spectacle.

In the future she hopes to add more competitions that test agility or hunting and retrieving skills.

McCready DeBruin of Winterdance invites owners to not just bring their dogs (on leash, please), but in addition try competing in the Air Dog for a small registration fee ($5 or less).

Newcomers will receive tips and coaching from the dog pros.

With only six vendors (dog treats/food and specialty products for dogs), more vendors will be welcomed to participate.

The event also comes with demonstrations by a working dog from Hank (Winterdance), who will bring his lead dog, agility dogs. Talks by representatives from Pretty Paws and a vet from Haliburton Veterinary, will speak about how to keep your dog looking great, safe and well cared for.

Admission is a $2 donation which will contribute to the event for following year.

Volunteers are wanted and anyone older than 16 is welcome to assist.

The event will proceed rain or shine.

To get more information contact McCready DeBruin at or 705-457-5281.

Hope you can make it to this family event.....
